- TYTHE’S ORIGINS

Intentional design can serve people, not just products.

TYTHEdesign was born from the idea that the principles of human-centered design (a key concept in industrial design) –creating a product that solves practical problems–could be applied to services and nonprofit work, as well. Created as a mission-driven company, TYTHE exists to apply design for social change and partner with organizations serving the public good. Since its inception, TYTHE has steadfastly remained true to our mission and exclusively worked with organizations seeking community or environmental betterment.

The name TYTHEdesign comes from the medieval concept of “tithing,” where community members were expected to give 10% of their earnings back to the church–the original social service provider. This concept is supported in Victor Papanak’s book, Design for the Real World, suggesting that all design firms should donate 10% of their expertise beyond the confines of the for-profit sector. Building on this vision, TYTHEcarries this principle not just in our name but through our goal to provide pro-bono services.

This mindset has shaped TYTHE’s mission to strengthen the community, elevate underrepresented voices, and turn community research into action. It continues to guide our work with government agencies, nonprofits, and private sector partners as they build more sustainable and resilient models.
